Glasbury Arts is delighted to announce the return of abstract artist Kate Freeman, last year’s artist-in-residence, with two painting workshops, the first in September 2010 with a second in April 2011. Kate will also be holding a Christmas-themed workshop for young people in December 2010.
• Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September, 10am to 4pm – workshop for adults
• Sunday 12 December, 1.30 to 4.30pm – workshop for adults
• Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 April, 10am to 4pm, workshop for adults
There are 12 places available in each adult workshop and 10 for young people. Participants need have no previous experience: the objective is to provide a stimulating experience which teaches new skills without focusing on one style of painting. We are delighted that The Contemporary Arts Society for Wales will again be featuring some of their new purchases prior to being placed in a permanent collection. This year we are delighted to welcome new graduate and former Gwernyfed High School art student, Lucy Hutton, as artist-in-residence. Almost three years later, the ever-popular Isla St Clair, one of Britain’s foremost traditional singers, returns with a one-woman show that combines timeless songs, ranging from Burns to classic laments, with fascinating and humorous anecdotes from a lifetime in showbusiness to create a wonderfully entertaining evening, full of music, warmth and humour.
Familiar to many from The Generation Game, for which she won an award as ‘TV personality of the year, it’s now her singing that garners awards, among them the accolade of ‘folk singer of the year’.

Saturday 11th December 2010 Glasbury Village Hall, 7:30pm | Planetarium Night with the Stars - When Art Meets Science | Presented by Gwernyfed High School Astronomy Club In February 2010, Gwernyfed High School Astronomy Club transformed the village hall into a planetarium and provided an unforgettable night for everyone who managed to buy a ticket. Due to popular demand they are now repeating this memorable experience, offering another unmissable opportunity as Gwernyfed High School Astronomy Club present material located through the Faulkes Telescopes in Hawaii and Australia
Accompanying the planetarium experience there will be:
• An exhibition of photographs taken through the telescopes and artistic interpretations of some of the
images, plus photographs by Mike Featherstone giving a unique view of the sky over Powys.
• A buffet meal
All included in the ticket price.

Sunday 16th January, 2011 Glasbury Village Hall, 2.00 to 3.45pm A writers’ workshop for young people with Jenny Valentine | Glasbury's bestselling children's author and winner of the Guardian Prize for Children's Fiction for her first novel, Finding Violet Park, hosts a writing workshop for young people, aged 10 to 14.

Lecture by William and John Gibbs
The inaugural Annual Art Lecture, Artists of the Llanthony Valley, will focus on the lives and work of JMW Turner, who painted the abbey in 1841 and John Piper who did the same exactly a century later. John and William Gibbs will also look at Eric Gill, who founded an artistic community close to Llanthony at Capel-y-ffin, though he did little work depicting the area. The lecture will also examine, through the arts, the changes in rural life.
The timetable for the day: 10.30-11am – coffee/tea 11am-12.30pm – lecture 12.30-2pm – buffet lunch Coffee, lunch and a glass of wine are all included in the ticket price.

Gwernyfed Drama Studio Téa Hodžic Trio in Concert **  Téa Hodžic's evocative and expresive voice has enchanted audiences from Womad to the South Bank to Sarajevo, garnering rave reviews wherever she performs. In this trio, a slimmed down and condensed incarnation of the Balkan super-group, Szapora, Téa explores the songs of her homeland, the former Yugoslavia, and its bordering countries – The Balkans and beyond - to the accompaniment of virtuoso musicians, violinist Oliver Wilson-Dickson, a ‘fearsome fiddler’ said BBC Radio 4, and Luke Carver Goss on accordion. An evening of music that is intimate, passionate and irresistible lies in store as the audience is taken on a journey through Macedonian songs and circle dances, music from Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia, and further afield from Bulgaria, Romania and even Russia as well as generous servings of traditional Roma or gypsy material.

Ticket prices £8/£6 Friends Scheme discount applies Saturday, 30th April 2011.Gwernyfed Drama Studio An evening of opera with members of the Chorus of Welsh National Opera ** produced by Welsh National Opera Welsh National Opera is a multi award-winning touring opera company performing to over 140,000 people a year across England and Wales.
The Chorus of Welsh National Opera has 40 members and became professional in 1968.
Since then it has become internationally recognised as a world-class ensemble by both critics and audiences. Recent productions including Khovanshchina, The Sacrifice and Aida have drawn huge praise for the Chorus.
Most Chorus members have active concert and operatic solo careers. The Chorus has performed in many major state events, including singing for HM The Queen as she opened the new Welsh Assembly.
Come and sing with Welsh National Opera Chorus Master Stephen Harris and four members
of the WNO Chorus There are 60 places available for Welsh National Opera’s workshop in Glasbury, from 10am to 5pm – we are looking for a balance of voices among the singers taking part. Open to all levels of ability, you just need to have a passion for singing.
Tea and coffee provided, but participants need to bring a packed lunch.
